Son of Sir Arthur Ernest Blake, K.B.E. and Florence Emily, his wife, of West Leake Manor, Notts. After leaving R.M.A., Woolwich, he served as Asst. Staff Officer to Chief Engineer, Third Army, subsequently joining 203rd Field Coy.
