Son of His Honour Judge and Mrs. Gawan-Taylor, of Croftlands, Heads Nook, Carlisle. A King's Scholar of Durham School and a Scholar of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. Born at Darlington, Co. Durham. His brother Francis also fell.
