Son of Frank and Mariquita Merriman, of Knutsford, Cheshire. Born at Hollingford House, Knutsford. Went to France in 1914 with "J" Bty. as Lt. Royal Horse Artillery, reverting to R.F.A. on promotion. Educated at Winchester College and Woolwich. Distinguished at both places as an athlete.
