I never knew my grandfather as he was killed at Ypres when my father was only a small boy but I always felt close to him. My son and I visited the Menin Gate and saw my grandfather's name listed under the Northumberland Fusiliers and we stayed for the Last Post in the evening - it was very moving. My poor grandma was left with three small children to look after and her life was pretty hard but she never complained and I know my grandfather would have been very proud of her. My grandfather was involved in folk music and I often think this is where I and my son got our musical interest from as I play in a Scottish Pipe Band and my son plays a trumpet.
