Pte Gershom Whetton of 17 Dalestorth Street, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire was killed in action at the age of 24 years. At the outbreak of WW1 he volunteered in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby) Regt and was drafted to France in the early part of September 1915, his first engagement being at Loos. Prior to enlisting Gershom worked at the Silver Hill Colliery .He was married at St Marys Parish Church on 14th February 1918 to Florence May Evans.
