Son of the late George Chapman and Louisa Chapman of 119 Rose Street, Mill road, Cambridge
Cyril had three brothers and four sisters Ailwyn, Winifred, Wilfred, Lorna, Stanley and Georgina
The following story was given to us to use by Cyril’s Niece Linda Sell from Great Shelford, Cambridge
Cyril was born on 24th May 1896 at 108 Catherine Street, Cambridge, he was the second son of George and Louisa Chapman. He was christened Charles Cyril, but was always known by his second name. His father died when he was 10 years old.
He served with the 1st Battalion as a ‘runner’ taking information between the front line and HQ. He was shot dead by a German sniper on Tuesday 26th March 1918 on the Somme
His brother George Ailwyn, was also known by his second name. Pte George Ailwyn Chapman was born on 25th November 1893. He also served with the 2nd Battalion Tank Corps and was killed on the Somme on 26th March 1918 age 25 he is also remembered with honour at Pozieres Memorial
Pte Chapman was awarded the British, victory and 15 Star Medals
