Tom is recorded as having "died of wounds" on 3rd July 1917. I think he was wounded on 2nd as his battalion (10th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters Notts. & Derby Regiment) were in the front line for a few days at that time - 27 June to 3 July. A regimental diarist records: 2nd July - 'Enemy started trench mortaring at night about 1 a.m. and also again at 'stand to' with medium trench mortars'. The diarist had for the month of July - 2 officers wounded. 18 Other ranks killed, 27 other ranks wounded (3 at duty). The cemetery location where Tom is buried was the base for 30 and 42 Casualty Clearing Stations, indicating he did not last for too long after being wounded. Soldiers died in great war - Wass, Thomas, born Chesterfield, Derbyshire, enlisted Hucknall, Notts, 13590, Private, Died of Wounds, France and Flanders 3/7/1917. Tom also served in the 1st battalion, & probably enlisted 28/8/1914 (ish).
