William Richard Ballard was the third child of William Buggins Ballard and Emma Ann neé Furlong; husband of Ellen neé Bennett & father of Winifred. He was born in Pimlico, London in 1880. On leaving school William followed his father's profession, initially as a paper hanger & then as a House Painter. He was conscripted into the King's Royal Rifle Corp & was killed in action, probably at the Battle of Havrincourt, on 13th September 1918.
