Arthur, I feel an affinity with you as a brother soldier, since I too served with the Lincolns, though my service was in peacetime and not in wartime. My main reason for choosing you to pay my tribute to is because you died on the anniversary of the greatest battle honour awarded to our regiment, that of the Battle of Sobraon in India in 1856. The main fighting taking place in France at the time you died was in the preliminary artillery bombardments which preceded the Battle of Verdun and it is most likely that this is where you lost your life. It is a shame that your remains were not recovered from the field of battle, and you were thereby denied the honour of a soldier's burial party and the firing of the salute by the honour guard. Sincere sympathy to your family who mourned your loss. Rest in Peace. Harry.
