Cpl Meynell’s Death

Yesterday morning Mrs Buckingham of 12 Worlds End received an official notification of the death of her son Cpl Herbert Sidney Meynell in No 2 General Hospital Le Harve on May 16th succumbing to wounds received over a week earlier.  Telegraphic information that he was in a critical condition reached Mrs Buckingham on May 10th and his wounds were described as gunshot in right thigh and left leg.  Cpl Meynell joined the Wisbech Territorial’s about two years ago from Tydd, where he was living with his grandmother and he went to camp twice with the Battalion before it was called up.  He was only 18 years of age on March 13th.  The Sister at the Le Harve Hospital wrote to Mrs Buckingham ‘I regret to tell you that your son Cpl Meynell died from the effects of his wounds on Sunday May 16th.  He was very patient and brave although wounded in both legs.  He had every care attention but never rallied very much after his admission to the hospital.  Please accept my deepest sympathy.  His mother has received his belt, which was decorated with the badges of several other Regiments as well as those of the Cambridgeshire’s.  Much sympathy is felt with his relatives in their heavy loss.
