039 of 876 2176 Pte Bertie Phillips C Company 1st Battalion Cambridgeshire Regiment Died 6th May 1915 aged 19 Son of Stephen Charles and Mary Ann Phillips of 91 Histon road, Old Chesterton, Cambridge Bertie had two older brothers Ernest and Stanley In 1911 Bertie was ages 14 was working as an errand boy before he went to the front Bertie was employed my Mr Pain of Bridge Street Cambridge Pte Phillips left effects to his mother Mary Ann of £4 0s 8d to his brother Stanley £1 0s 7d and to his brother Ernest £1 0s 7d Pte Bertie Phillips is remembered with honour at Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial Transcript from Cambridge Independent Press Pte Phillips Killed News has been received that Pte B Phillips of C Company 1st Cambridge has been killed in action the sad event was announced in a letter from Sergt Haddon he writes, I am sorry to say I have to send sad news, young Phillips of my Company was killed by shrapnel whilst returning from the trenches on the 5th of this month no further details have yet been received. Phillips whose home is at 91 Histon Road was formally employed by Mr Pain of Bridge Street. He was 18 years of age.
