019 of 876 2455 Pte Herbert Frederick White 1st Battalion Cambridgeshire Regiment Died 13th April 1915 aged 23 Son of Christopher and Lizzie White of 16 Orchard Terrace, Orchard Street, Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire Herbert had two brothers and three sisters George, Florry, Elsie, Rosie and Nelson In 1911 aged 19 Herbert worked as a brick labourer Pte Herbert Fred white is remembered with honour at Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial Transcript from Wisbech Standard Whittlesey Private Killed The sad tidings have reached Mr and Mrs C. White, of 16 Orchard Street Whittlesey that their Mrs White- It is with great regret that I have to write to you to tell you that your son Pte White of our Company was killed on Monday last the 11th.  The whole Company and his many comrades in the Regiment sympathise with you in your great loss. He was a good soldier and will be missed by all who knew him.  It may be some consolation to you to know that he was killed instantly.  He is buried just behind the trenches here and his grave is properly marked and kept.  I am writing this for Capt Staton, as he was himself slightly wounded yesterday.  Assuring you of our sympathy for you in your great trouble. Saunders’’ The deceased soldier who was only 23 years of age was well known and greatly liked in the town.  He joined the Territorial’s just after the outbreak of the war, and left this country on Feb 14th.
