Prior to enlisting Pte Arthur Turner worked at the New Hucknall Colliery. He enlisted with the Sherwood Foresters(Notts and Derby) Regt soon after the outbreak of the war. He was subsequently transferred to the Royal Marines on 16th September 1914 just one week after his enlistment. He was drafted to the Dardenelles where he was wounded and suffered from fever. He was brought home to recuperate and was again sent to France in June 1916. Pte Turner was born at Kilburn, Derbyshire, the son of Thomas and Sarah. He married Agnes Lee at St Mary's Parish Church, Sutton-in-Ashfield, on 18th July 1908 and was the father of four children.
