Lance Corporal Swindell was killed in action at the age of 24years. He was the son of John and Mary Ann of 13 Dalestorth Street, Sutton-in-Ashfield and worked for the Great Northern Railway at Shirebrook, Kimberley and latterly at Hucknall. He was actively involved with the Reform Street Methodist Church in their Sunday School, the Christian Endeavour Society and Band of Hope. and had great promise of becoming a preacher. Upon joining up in April 1916 he was attached to the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby) Rgt, regimental number 49797 before being transferred to the Kings (Liverpool Regiment).
