William Smith had been missing for six months before his wife received official confirmation that he had been killed in action. on 11th March 1915. He was a reservist who had joined the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby) Rgt on 5th August 1914. He was wounded in the face by shrapnel shortly after reaching the hostilities and was invalided home. He returned to France in November 1914. Prior to enlisting he worked at the Silverhill Colliery.
