Pte Cyril Smith enlisted on 4th September 1914 as a Sherwood Forester (Notts and Derby) Regt, regimental number 16353 and transferred to the Royal Marines on 16th September 1914. He was born on Meden Bank, Stanton Hill, Nottinghamshire on 15th August 1889, the son of Samuel and Priscilla. He married Lily Percival at St Marys Parish Church, Sutton-in-Ashfield on 20th June 1908 and was father to a young family. He was killed in action whilst fighting in the Dardenelles at the age of 26 years.
