Pte Arthur Smith had been a regular soldier serving with the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby) Regt and after his return from India he left the army and was placed on the reserve list. He was recalled at the outbreak of the war and was killed in action at the age of 33 years on 20th September 1914. Born on the 18th June 1882 at New Cross, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire he was the son of James and Caroline.
