Herbert Shooter lived with his parents at Woodhouse Yard, Alfreton Road, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire prior to enlisting at the age of 17 years. He was born in Kirkby-in-Ashfield and had worked at the New Hucknall Colliery. He was drafted to France in March 1916 and was sent to Wrest Park Hospital for treatment. after being wounded in July 1916. He was sent out to France again in January 1917 and was reported missing whilst on ration party duties on the 20th September 1917.
