We discovered a picture in a family book. Inside was a picture of George Charles Horne (also known as Charlie) with his brother Sidney. Alongside the picture was a drawing that Charlie drew of the dug-out next to his when he was in the trenches. The picture has with it the words 'Dear Gordon, Here is an attempt to show you what was called a 'dug-out' and is our shelter when in the trenches. Ours is the one next to this, ours is made of turf (?) and does not look quite so scruffy as the one in the picture.' The picture was dated 15/5/2015. Charlie was killed by shell-fire on 1/6/2015. His brother Sidney was by his side when he died, and he never recovered after losing his brother. Charlie was highly esteemed in the Brigade and the family has letters of appreciation written by his commanding officer.
