He enlisted in the Cheshire Regiment at Stalybridge, Cheshire, and later he transferred to the Machine Gun Corps. He was killed in action on the 29 September 1918, aged 19 years, and he is buried in Vadencourt British Cemetery, Maissemy, Aisne, France.
Rudland Henry Apted was born at Marylebone, London on the 13 August 1899 to Henry Rudland Apted and Laura Emily Butters who were married at St Luke’s Church, Marylebone Road, London, on the 4 September 1898. In 1911 he was resident with his parents and three sisters on Mount Street, Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire, still at school. Later the family emigrated to Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Canada.
