4019 Private Henry Shaw of the 1/6th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment:
He enlisted in the Cheshire Regiment at Stalybridge, Cheshire, and he was killed in action on the 30 July 1916, aged 33 years (actually 40 years). He is buried in the Knightsbridge Cemetery, Mesnil-Martinsart, Somme, France.
Henry Shaw was born at Preston, Lancashire, in 1876 to Henry Shaw and Mary Hannah Lucas who were married at St John’s Church, Preston, in 1875. He married Alice Preece at Holy Trinity, Gee Cross, Hyde, Cheshire, in 1904. In 1911 he was resident with his wife and family on Park Street, Dukinfield, Cheshire, employed as a tram conductor by the SHMD Joint Transport and Electricity Board. In 1901 his parents were resident on High Street, Stalybridge, but his mother died in the same year and his father moved to Booth Street, Stalybridge. After the death of Henry Shaw in 1916 his widow moved to Hallbottom Street, Newton, Hyde.
