Patrick (Paddy) was a single man who, on the death of his father in 1902, became the male head of the family consisting of his mother and five, surviving, younger siblings. His first generation Irish-Australian family, living in Sydney, were divided in their views on the merits of World War I. Some believed this was an English war, of no concern to Australians especially those of Irish descent. Patrick took a contrary position and sacrificed his life as a volunteer in the ranks of the Australian 55th Infantry Battalion.
