Edwin Pepper was the youngest son of Councillor Elijah and Elizabeth Hannah Pepper. He trained as a teacher at Reading University taking up appointments at Bristol, Ramsgate and H.M.S Training Ship 'Cornwall'. After a stay of 2 years on the 'Cornwall' he voluntarily enlisted in the Civil Service Rifles stationed at Winchester. He transferred to the Machine Gun Corps and was sent to Grantham. He was drafted to Palestine in November 1917 and to France in May 1918. He died on 21st September 1918 at the age of 27 years.
