Alex Lockhart was born at Balgone Barns Farm Cottages in 1885 the son of Alexander Lockhart a farm steward and Jane McDonald. In 1900 at the age of 15 he would find work as a golf caddie during the summer season, and would soon after gain a license as a freelance golf professional on the West Links, North Berwick. Alex would become a talented player before enlisting in the Royal Garrison Artillery being given the rank of Gunner. He would fall in action in October 1917 during the third Battle of Ypres, Passchendaele. Alex was 32 years of age.

The Professional Golfers' Association
