William Hooper came from a family of carpet weavers in Kidderminster, a town famous for this industry. He didn't join the rest of his family in this work but joined the 3rd battalion of the Worcester Regiment sometime before 1911 and joined the theatre of war on 12th August 1914, just eight days after its declaration.
