James, we learn most about you from an article in the Highland Times on 10th May 1917. You were reported as being a native of the Parish of Kirkhill, and first went to Greenock to join the Police Force there. After five years in Greenock you emigrated to Canada, where you joined the Ontario Prison Service. After joining up in 1915 in the Canadian Grenadier Guards you were sent to the UK for training, and very quickly gained your commission. You were in the front line trenches towards the end of 1916, and escaped more or less unscathed until you were slightly wounded but stayed on duty. But you were killed in action on the 16th of April 1917. This would have been in the Battle of Arras when strong German counter-attacks had begun on the 13th of April. The 1st Canadian Division had been in the thick of the fighting since the beginning of April. James, we salute you as a brave soldier. We have sincere sympathy for your wife and baby in Leith and for your parents in Gollanfield. Rest in Peace. Terry and Harry.
