Roderick, we first read your name on the family gravestone in Wardlaw Old Cemetery, No 223, erected by your father in memory of his two sons, Donald who died in infancy, and you, (although he described your rank as a Corporal aged 28) and his wife Ann your mother, who died in 1924. Since your father was a blacksmith and we know there used to be a Smithy Cottage at Bunchrew, perhaps you lived there for a while. If so, this would definitely establish your link with Kirkhill even though your name does not appear on the War Memorial there. So far as your military service is concerned, we read that during the 3rd Battle of Ypres the British forces advanced to just south-east of St Janshoek on the 30th of August, and it was most likely that it was in the aftermath of this attack that you died on the next day. Roderick, we salute you as a brave soldier, and have sincere sympathy to your parents who mourned your loss. Rest in Peace. Terry and Harry.
