Murdo, we know that you used to be the local postman for Bunchrew District in Kirkhill, which is why you were commemorated on the Kirkhill War Memorial. We read that you had formerly seen military service in South Africa with the Cameron Highlanders. The Highland Times for 10 May 1918, in reporting your death, wrote that you were highly respected by all who knew you. It was so sad to read that you were in transit to the Eastern Front, sailing in HM Transport "Transylvania", when it was torpedoed by an enemy submarine in the Mediterranean Sea. You were officially recorded as missing, believed drowned, together with 412 of your comrades and crew, on 4th May 1917 at the age of 39 years. Murdo you were obviously a keen soldier, having fought in South Africa. We commend you for rejoining when you were already older than most of your comrades would have been. We offer our sincere condolences to your relatives in Nairn and the Black Isle who mourned your sad loss. Rest in Peace. Terry and Harry.
