Herbert took up a bursarship with the intention of becoming a teacher and went to Manchester University. On the day war broke out he was in camp on Salisbury Plain with the University Officer Training Corps. When the camp finished he returned to Manchester to finish his Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree. He enlisted in the Lancashire Fusiliers on October 1917 and was sent to France. He contracted an illness after being involved in severe fighting during the Battle of Arras and was sent home on sick leave. He returned to France and was killed in action on 27 September 1918, aged 24. He is commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.  The journalist who wrote the article notifying his death said, “Lieutenant Goldsmith was a young man of many attainments and genial disposition endeared him to a large circle of friends.” His parents placed a memorial notice in the newspaper which said, “Enshrined in loving hearts, fond memory dwells.”
