Roderick, we read that you had joined the Camerons in May 1904. After being at Fort George for some time you joined the 2nd Battalion in South Africa, and later saw service in North and South China. You came home in 1909, and were still on the reserve when war broke out. You then rejoined and were posted to the 1st Battalion which left for France on the 12th of August 1914. You were involved in the fierce fighting soon afterwards, and on the 14th of September the battalion lost 151 casualties and Pte Ross Tolleton won the VC. On the 4th of October the battalion was near the Chemin des Dames, where two days later you, sadly, lost your life. Roderick, you were a real old soldier in more senses than one, for having enlisted in 1904 you must have been at least 28 years old and with at least ten years service to your credit. We honour you as the brave soldier you undoubtedly were. Sincere sympathy to you and to your family back at the croft in Kirkhill. Rest in Peace. Terry and Harry.
