49920 Private Alfred Smith of the 2/6th Battalion, Manchester Regiment:

 

He enlisted in the army at Denton and he was killed in action on the 26 March 1918, aged 20 years. He is buried in Jeancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, France.

 

Alfred Smith was born at Stalybridge in 1898 to Samuel Smith and Elizabeth Ann Page who were married at St Mark’s Church, Dukinfield, in 1898. He married May Chambers at the Wesleyan Methodist Church, Two Trees Lane, Haughton Green, Denton, in 1916.
