Walter Harding Pack was the nephew of my Great-Grandma, Elizabeth Pack. He was born and grew up in England, emigrating to Australia with his father and step-mother in 1913. He joined the Australian Imperial Force on 1st July 1916 at the age of 18 years and 7 months. He embarked for England on 6th December 1916, arriving on 17th February 1917. Whilst on leave in England he visited his relatives and an aunt remembers him as being "a handsome young man full of fun". This is borne out by the one photograph we have of him and his family before they emigrated to Australia. He left England for France on 24th April 1917 and was then sent on to Belgium with the 11th Machine Gun Company, where he was killed in action on 4th October 1917. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
