Ernest George Ballard was the eleventh of fifteen children of Albert Charles Ballard & Caroline neé Costin. He was born on 6th November 1896 in East Malling, Kent. Ernest enlisted at New Hythe, Aylesford, Kent as Private 3883 in the Royal West Kent Regiment and was later transferred to the 20th (County of London) Battalion (Blackheath and Woolwich) as Private 633344. He was killed in action at the Battle of Passchendaele on 3rd June 1917.
