Charles Hugh Aspley was the uncle of Private Jimmy Aspley, 3/Worcestershire, who
was killed near Lindenhoek on 27th November 1914. Charles Hugh had served
in the Royal Field Artillery before 1900 and was in the army reserve in August 1914.
Over age, he nevertheless voluntered and went to the Western Front with 33 Battery, XXXIII Brigade, RFA. However, during the winter of 1914-15 he developed a severe bout of trench nephritis and evacuated to the Queen Alexandra Military Hospital in Cosham, Portsmouth. Charles struggled through until 6th September
1915 when he finally died. He is buried in plot D.44 of Portsdown (Christ Church) Military Cemetery. He left a widow, Emily, and three daughters, May, Kate and Alice back in Birmingham.
