I am Albert's great niece. He and his brother Fred Stokes (my grandfather) left Stepney together to go to war. Only Fred came back. Fred was heartbroken that he left his brother so far away - buried at the Jerusalem War Cemetery on the Mount of Olives. My Grandad was himself shot in the shoulder and used to tell us that his brother, Albert, stopped the bleeding by stuffing the wound with his shirt. We, Albert's family have been thinking of him at this time. To begin your life in the East End of London and then lie buried in a far away land aged 21 is very poignant. 'A Life Hardly Begun.' We will never know what life may have brought to him.
