James, we see you recorded on the 1891 Census at Achnalack between Old Kiltarlity and Fanellan, age 5, together with your parents Donald and Ellen, sister Bessie and brothers Robert and Alexander. We know from the report in the Highland News, 2nd December 1915, that you had worked in Inverness before obtaining a good position in London. They wrote that you threw up this post on the outbreak of war in order to join the colours. Since you were an excellent shot you joined the company of sharpshooters. Your unit was in the foremost line in the Battle of Loos, and therefore suffered heavy casualties with nearly all the officers being killed. Reveille was sounded at 02.00 on the day of the attack, 25th September 1915, and the battalion "went over the top and caught the enemy completely by surprise". By 07.00 even the German Second line had been taken, but there had been a heavy price to pay, with 70 killed, 149 wounded and 27 missing. You were, sadly, one of those who died on that fateful day.
