We visited my great uncle's grave in 2010.  The anchor on the gravestone reminds you that yes, he joined up as an able seaman and later was given a khaki uniform and a rifle.  I've seen a picture in a family album of "Uncle Jack and Friends" stood around a motorbike and sidecar, looking happy and excited - the next page is the gravestone.
