Private Francis Thomas Lind died near danger tree during the first day of the Battle of the Somme. His regiments objective was to take Y Ravine at Beaumont-Hamel. However, the weeks of bombardment prior to the offensive had done little to destroy the German defensive barbed wire. Private Lind lost his life as he approached the German barbed wire. 323 other men from the Royal Newfoundland Regiment were killed that day, 386 were wounded.
