Guthrie Andrew born in 1888, was the son of William Smith Andrew and Mary Dunlop. Guthrie’s paternal grandparents were Alexander Andrew (of Monkton ) and Margaret Smith (of Symington, Ayrshire).
His siblings were Mary Dunlop Andrew, Jane Sillars Andrew and David Dunlop Andrew.
Guthrie was an apprentice engineer at John Browns Shipyards in Clydebank and thereafter was employed as ships engineer on the ‘Marston’ of Glasgow and then on the ‘Nyassa’ as 3rd engineer.
Guthrie enlisted on the 4th September 1916. His address then was 3 Glossop Road, Balmain Sydney.
He sailed to Folkestone from Sydney on the SSAfric, a ship built in Belfast in 1899 and requisitioned by the Australian government to carry troops and horses. SSAfric was sunk in 1917 by a torpedo in the English Channel and is now visited by divers.
Guthrie was killed in action on the 9th August 1918 less than a hundred days before the end of the war at Harbonnieres in France. After his death his wallet photos and letters were sent to his sister Mary Dunlop Andrew who was living at Grove Lane, Denmark Hill London
