He was killed in action on the 12 May 1917, aged 24 years, and he is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.
John Charles Jones was born at Denton in 1894 to William Mellody (aka Melody) Jones and Elizabeth Jane O’Brien (aka O’Brian) who were married at St Clement’s Church, Higher Openshaw, Manchester, on the 12 August 1893. In 1911 he was resident with his parents and sisters, Bertha (13) and Lilian (11), on King Street, off Market Street, Droylsden, employed as a boiler riveter. Previously the family was resident on Peacock Street, Denton, and later on Alfred Street, Clayton, Manchester.
