George Blowers, otherwize George Elijah Blowers, a son of George and Rosanna Blowers, is commemorated on the Sporle with Palgrave War Memorial, the Necton War Memorial, and at the Arras Memorial, in France. He was born at Swaffham in 1886, and by 1901 was a stock feeder living at Sporle. George married Rose Ellen Clark in 1910, and was a farm labourer, still at Sporle, in 1911. He enlisted, at King's Lynn, into the Norfolk Regiment, and became Private 32087 of the 9th Battalion. Private Blowers served overseas in Europe, and was killed in action, in France, on the 21st of March 1918. After his death he was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal. A younger brother of George, James Robert Blowers, born in Sporle in 1896, served as Gunner 2648/876121 in the East Anglian Brigade, of the Royal Field Artillery. They had another brother, Herbert, born 1887, but no surviving war records have been found for him. Private George Blowers, and his brothers, were second cousins of both my grandfathers, Charles and Leonard Gilding.
