When Rudyard Kipling's son John tried to enlist with the Irish Guards, his application was rejected due to his poor eyesight, so Kipling used his influence to obtain a commission for his son. John went missing during the Battle of Loos in September 1915. In 1916, Kipling wrote a poem that beginsĀ ' Have you news of my boy Jack?' in memory of his loss.
