Ewart Mackintosh, an officer in the Seaforth Highlanders carried Private David Sutherland who had been wounded through 100 yards of German trenches, chased by the Germans. Sutherland died and his body had to be left behind. Mackintosh won the Military Cross and wrote 'In Memoriam' in memory of David Sutherland. Ewart was killed aged 24 in November 1916.
