Albert 'Bertie' Snowball was born in Baildon, Yorkshire in May 1887 the son of a farm bayliff and, one of seven siblings. His entry into the profession of golf is somewhat unclear at this stage nevertheless, it is recorded that in 1902 he became a member of The Professional Golfers' Association, Northern Section. During his career he would go on to hold professional posts at golf clubs in England, Blakney, Sarborough and North Cliff, Ireland, Royal Portrush and Portmarnock. Wales, Criccieth and finally Scotland, Carnoustie where he would become a club maker with Robert Simpson. While at the latter club he would compete  successfully in a number of tournaments as Bertie was a highly talented and a well respected player. He would enlist in the 5th Battalion Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) at the onset of the war and go off to fight. Sadly he was to fall in action during the Battle of Aubers Ridge in May 1915 at the age of 27. Corporal Bertie Snowball is buried in Le Trou Aid Post Cemetery, Fleurbaix, France and his name appears on a memorial plaque in the Carnoustie clubhouse.
