David, “IN PROUD AND AFFECTIONATE REMEMBRANCE OF THE OFFICERS, WARRANT OFFICERS, NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICERS AND MEN OF THE 15TH BATTALION, HIGHLAND LIGHT INFANTRY, CITY OF GLASGOW REGIMENT (TRAMWAYS BATTALION) WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE FOR THEIR KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918.   ALSO OF THOSE MEMBERS OF THE BATTALION WHO DIED WHILE SERVING WITH OTHER UNITS”.        As seen on the Memorial at the Riverside (Transport) Museum, Glasgow, 15th August 2018.  Harry

As I do not know the precise circumstances of your death, but, as a former soldier myself, doing my National Service in 1950-51 with the 1st and 7th Royal Warwickshire Regiment and later with the 1st Royal Lincolnshire Regiment in the Suez Canal Zone and Aqaba, I feel honoured to be able to salute you as the brave soldier in the Highland Light Infantry you undoubtedly were, who died in the service of his country.  I can but quote the memorial hymn again, “All you had hoped for, all you had you gave to save mankind – yourself you scorned to save.”   Your name as a fallen comrade was engraved on the Riverside Memorial in Glasgow. I trust that you had a Guard of Honour at your graveside who fired the traditional salute to a fallen comrade.  In addition you are also remembered every year at the Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance, when the parade is at the attention while the Queen’s Colour and the National Standard are dipped in salute as the Last Post is sounded. I offer my sympathy to your relatives and friends who mourned your sacrifice. You are in God’s hands now.  Rest in Peace. Harry.
