John Arthur Wheeler was born on the 30th July 1893 in St Pancras, London. His parents were Samuel and Elizabeth Wheeler (nee Clenshaw) and he had thirteen siblings, three of whom died in infancy. In 1911, the family were living at the Old King's Head Pub, 28 Upper Clapton Road, London, where John's father was the Licensee. John's occupation was Clerk.

John served as a Lance Corporal in The Buffs (East Kent) Regiment and was killed on the 1st July 1916 at The Somme. He has no known grave and is commemorated at the Thiepval Memorial.
