Corporal Gerald Stewart Pope He was born 1892 (3rd quarter) Currey Rival, Taunton Somerset, his Mother Margaret Pope, no father. Christened High Ham, Langport, Somerset on 24th August 1892. In 1901 Gerald was visiting famaily in High Ham, but his Mother was listed as a servant in Linton, Herefordshire. 1911 Gerald was listed as a 17 year old Wagoner in Marston, Hereford; His Mother Margret as an enployed Laundress at the Union Workhouse in Ross on Wye. He was enlisted into the Herefordshire Regt at Ross On Wye, from the Merrivale Farm, Ross and was given the number 1682. He arrived in Gallipoli with the 1Bn Herefordshire Regiment 9th August 1915 in the theatre of war 2B. Corporal Gerald Stewart Pope was fatally wounded in action on 26th March 1917, Age 25. This was during the 1st Battle of Gaza on Green Hill. At this time he had just been given a new number 235381. He has no known grave and is listed on the Jerusalem Memorial Israel Panel 54; the Ross on Wye Memorial and on the Herefordshire Regiment Roll Of Honnor in Suvla Barracks, Hereford. Corporal Gerald Stewart Pope was entitled to the 1914/15 Star, British War Medal, and Victory Medal. His Mother Margaret would have been sent a bronze memorial plaque, a memorial scroll, and a letter from Buckingham Palace; she was living at 3 Alton Street, Ross on Wye and died in Ross on Wye in 1947, Margret lost her only son in World War 1 and then lived through the Second World War. I visited the regimental barracks in Hereford, and where he used to live. I have laid a poppy in his memory and a rose for his Mum. Peace and Blessings
