40331 Private George Harry Stubbs of the 20th Battalion, Manchester Regiment, formerly 5691 of the Lancashire Fusiliers:

 

He was killed in action on the 1 March 1917, aged 26 years, and he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.

 

George Harry Stubbs was born at Denton in 1890 to George Stubbs and Jane Wych who were married at Ashton-under-Lyne in 1887. Jane died at Bury, Lancashire, in 1902, aged 34 years, and George Stubbs married Mary Cooper/Jordan at All Saints, Elton, Bury, in 1904. In 1911 George Harry Stubbs was resident with his father, stepmother, and siblings on Wood Street, Elton, Bury, employed as a piecer at a cotton mill. Later the family moved to Hill Street, South Shore, Blackpool.
