He was the son of Joseph Benjamin and Mary and born in Wrenthorpe in about 1888. By 1891 the family were living in Charlotte Street Wakefield and Joseph was a bricklayer empoying staff. Ten years later they were living at Morten Parade, Wakefield and Arthur was a plasterer. Arthur married Ethel Gosney on 31st Oct 1914 and enlisted in 1916 when he was living in Thornes Lane. He was now also working as a tram driver as well as plasterer. He was posted to France on 16th Dec 1916.
