I believe this was Fred Hartley commemorated on the Kirkhamgate War Memorial. He was born in about 1880 in Beck Bottom, Kirkhamgate near Wakefield, son of Henry, a coal miner and Hannah. Fred lived with his parents in Beck Bottom until his marriage to Jane Hartley on 23rd March 190. Fred was a 21 year old coal miner and Jane was 17. By 1911 Fred was still living at Beck Bottom with Jane and their four children Fred was working at Lofthouse Colliery. At some point after this and before Fred's death the family moved to Engine Fold Kirkhamgate.

Fred was reported missing on 1st July 1916 - the first day of the Battle of the Somme- but according to the local paper was only officially reported killed in April of the following year.
